Yaz Manufacturing Defects Lawyers

Yaz is a type of birth control pill that contains both estrogen and progestin hormones (drospirenone and ethinyl estradiol). It is said to be 99 percent effective as a contraceptive and prevents ovulation. It also changes the cervical mucous and uterine lining so that the sperm cannot reach the uterus and fertilize the egg. Yaz also has claims to treat moderate acne among women who are at least 14 years old and treating symptoms of premenstrual dysporic disorder (PMDD) symptoms including anxiety, depression and irritability, lack of concentration or energy, bloating and weight gain.

Yaz is a 28-day birth control pack that contains both "active" and "reminder" pills to keep you on your regular cycle. The period should start while you are using the four reminder pills.

Lawsuits over Yaz, and its predecessor, Yasmin, allege that drug manufacturer, Bayer Healthcare Pharmaceuticals Inc., failed to protect consumers from certain dangers associated with their birth control pill. Lawsuits allege that Bayer did not properly research the medication or warn women about potential side effects. Drospirenone, a fourth-generation progestin, is unique to Yaz, Yasmin and a generic version of the contraceptive known as Ocella. The progestin increases blood potassium levels, which could result in various Yaz health problems such as hyperkalemia that usually causes sudden cardiac arrests and deaths related to heart failure.

Yaz experts believe that drospirenone, a new fourth-generation progestin component of Yaz birth control pills, is more dangerous than the progestin used in comparable birth control medication. Both Yaz and Yasmin contain progestin. The only difference in their composition is that amount of estrogen in higher in Yasmin (30mcg) than Yaz, which contains 20mcg. Experts say the potassium remains in the body even during Yaz's "inactive period" thereby elevating potassium levels in a woman's body that could lead to serious side effects such as hyperkalemia or blood clots.

These products are apparently dangerous even when manufactured safely. But recent reports by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration question the company's manufacturing and quality control processes. In a warning letter posted in September 2009, the FDA announced that its inspectors uncovered testing problems at the company's plant in Berghamen, Germany during a visit in March 2009. FDA inspectors said the company measured the quality of its drug ingredients based on an average of several samples instead of reporting individual test results. Bayer shipped eight batches of the drugs to the U.S. that were tested using that method, which the FDA does not accept.
