Yaz and Yasmin are oral contraceptives or birth control pills manufactured by Bayer Healthcare Pharmaceuticals Inc. Each of these birth control pills contain ethinyl estradiol and the new "fourth generation" progestin drospirenone (DRSP), which is known to increase the risk of Yaz hyperkalemia or elevated levels of potassium in the blood stream. Yaz and Yasmin are also known to cause blood clots, specifically deep vein thrombosis (DVT), which is a blood clot in a deep vein, usually in the legs.

These clots are dangerous because they can break loose and travel through the bloodstream to the lungs and block blood flow to the lungs, also known as pulmonary embolism. This is a life-threatening condition. Deep vein thrombosis can also lead to long-lasting health problems. In such cases, blood clots most often develop in the calf and thigh veins.

In about 50 percent of the cases, deep vein thrombosis occurs without any noticeable symptoms. Some of the signs and symptoms that can occur include:

• Swelling in the affected leg, including swelling of the ankle and foot
• Pain in the leg that often feels like cramping
• Redness or warmth over the affected area
• Pain or swelling in the arms or neck

The warning signs of a pulmonary embolism include unexplained sudden onset of shortness of breath; chest pain; dizziness; coughing up blood; and a sense of anxiety or nervousness. Another common complication that can occur after deep vein thrombosis is a condition known as post-phlebitic syndrome also known as post-thrombotic syndrome. Common symptoms include leg swelling, leg pain and skin discoloration. This syndrome is caused as a result of vein damage from the blood clot, which reduces blood flow in affected areas.
