Yaz birth control pills pose an increased risk of heart attack among users. Yaz contains the hormones ethinyl estradiol and drospirenone or progestin. Recent studies have found that the risk of heart attack among the users of Yaz birth control is higher compared to women who do not use these medications.

Smoking increases the risk of a Yaz heart attack side effect. Also at-risk are women who have a history of heart attack or stroke; heart disease such as heart valve problems or arrhythmias; angina or chest pain due to decreased flow of blood to the heart; blood clots in a leg; deep vein thrombosis or blood clots in the deep veins of a leg.
