Yaz Hyperkalemia Attorneys

Yaz birth control pills have been linked to a variety of serious side effects including kidney damage and hyperkalemia or elevated levels of potassium in the body. These side effects are said to be the direct effect of the hormone drospirenone or "fourth generation" progestin, which is said to increase the levels of potassium in the body.

Kidney Damage

The kidneys are vital organs that play an important role in the body's function. They not only filter the blood and get rid of waste products by balancing the levels of electrolytes in the body, but also control blood pressure and stimulate the production of red blood cells. Chronic kidney failure or kidney damage refers to the gradual loss of your kidneys' filtering ability, usually because of high blood pressure or diabetes. When kidney function is seriously impaired, dangerous levels of fluid and waste can quickly accumulate in your body.

Kidney failure, especially in Yaz kidney failure cases, can occur because of kidney infections, which start when germs in the bladder travel up a patient's tubes leading to the kidneys and then multiply. Chronic kidney infection can get worse over a period of time and eventually lead to kidney failure. The most common symptoms of kidney infection include:

  • Fever or chills
  • Upset stomach
  • Constant need to urinate
  • Lower back pain
  • Blood in urine and
  • Pain or burning sensation while urinating

Kidney stones are another potential health risk associated with Yaz birth control. The most common symptom of a kidney stone is severe pain and is usually accompanied by a sharp or cramping pain the back, side or lower abdomen; nausea or blood in urine. You may also experience fever or chills if you have a kidney stone.

Hyperkalemia

Hyperkalemia is one of the more serious side effects of Yaz birth control and is a potentially life-threatening disorder. The most common cause of Hyperkalemia is kidney failure or kidney damage. It could also be cause by an excessive use of potassium supplements. Users of Yaz and Yasmin birth control are at risk for hyperkalemia because of the elevated levels of potassium due to the hormone drospirenone or progestin. Hyperkalemia, if left untreated, could result in sudden heart failure and/or death; symptoms include:

  • Muscle fatigue
  • Weakness
  • Paralysis
  • Abnormal heart rhythms or arrythmias
  • Nausea

The most important clinical effect of hyperkalemia is related to the electrical rhythm of the heart. While mild hyperkalemia probably has a limited effect on the heart, moderate hyperkalemia can produce EKG changes. EKG is an electric reading of the heart muscles. Severe hyperkalemia can suppress the electrical activity of the heart and can cause the heart to stop beating.
