Yaz and Yasmin Lawsuits

Yaz and Yasmin are birth control pills or contraceptives that are not only touted as a pill to prevent unwanted pregnancies, but also as a "miracle pill," which treats moderate acne and a premenstrual syndrome known as premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD). But recent research links Yaz to numerous serious and life-threatening side effects such as heart attacks, blood clots and strokes among women who used the medication. Bayer Healthcare Pharmaceuticals Inc., which manufactures Yaz and Yasmin, misled consumers by minimizing these serious side effects during its marketing and advertising campaign. Thousands of women in the United States and very likely around the world are finding out that this "miracle pill" wasn't exactly a miracle. Many women have been killed or left with lifelong disabilities as a result of trusting the drug manufacturer and believing Bayer's claims about Yaz.

As of October 2009, Bayer has been served with 74 Yaz and Yasmin lawsuits, and counting. According to these plaintiffs, they have developed severe health problems from taking the oral contraceptives. They are alleging that the Yasmin and Yaz brands of pills increase the risk of strokes, heart problems and blood clots even among those who do not smoke and are otherwise perfectly healthy. Bayer's own studies maintain that the risks associated with Yaz or Yasmin are no different than other birth control pills in the market.

Aside from the serious side effects of heart attack, brain damage and blood clots, Yaz's side effects also include a condition known as hyperkalemia (elevated potassium levels in the body), kidney damage, mood swings, severe headaches or migraines, breast lumps, high blood pressure and elevated cholesterol. The main difference between Yaz and Yasmin is that while Yasmin is indicated solely as a contraceptive, Yaz is also indicated for use in the treatment of acne and PMDD. Yaz and Yasmin's dosage and formulation also differ, but Bayer marketed it similarly until the FDA intervened in October 2008.
